Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a partner?
On average, no.....We change partners frequently during our classes. That way, you learn to dance with more than one person. You also get the chance to meet the others/make new friends. The exceptions to this are our Dips/Drops/Air Steps/Slides and Competition & Performance classes or our Perforrmance Dance Team. Any classes that require a partner will clearly indicate this in their descriptions; otherwise, no partner is necessary.

Dances never require a partner. It can feel 'safer' for people who are new at it to come with people they know, so we encourage people to come with friends, but this is not necessary. The dance community, on average, is a very friendly bunch & most people happily ask new people to dance or accept if asked.

What should I wear?
The important thing is to be comfortable. Casual clothing is fine for classes. Some people do come directly from the office to attend class & they come dressed in business attire, but it is by no means necessary.

Dances unless otherwise specified are also casual - some dances encourage vintage clothing or the like, but these are always suggestions & are never required.

What kind of shoes should I wear?
Again, comfort is the key. We recommend flats as opposed to heels for the ladies, but this is a personal preference, so whatever you are most comfortable with is perfect. Leather-soled shoes seem to be best for the gentleman. Sneakers/rubber-soled shoes are fine, but it might help to wear down the tread on the soles a bit first before dancing in them in order to make it easier for you to spin/turn without sticking.

Some people like to wear shoes specifically made for dancing. We recommend that if you are new to dancing, you take a couple of classes to make sure you enjoy it before you invest in any dance-related purchases. If you do decide to buy dance shoes or other dance accessories, we will happily share information with you as to our experience & where to purchase said items.

Do I need to pre-register for class?
Pre-registration is preferred for all classes as it allows us to plan better & to recruit more leaders/followers if needed. However, we do accept walk-in registrations on the first-night of class at Glen Echo on Monday nights & drop-ins are welcome for our Tuesday night classes at the Sport n Health Center Northwest in Friendship Heights/Tenley Circle area.

A registration form is available here. The form can be downloaded/printed and mailed with a check or you can pre-register online & pay via paypal.
